Mountain lion hunts: The manly, outdoorsy side of your brain conjures up visions of giant Tom cats high in a tree with barking lion dogs gathered around excited by the view and smell of this giant cat in a tree. The reality of the hunt is that once the scent is started, the real work begins of post holing through knee deep snow headed for that cat in a tree or bayed up in the cliffs and usually at the expense of gaining a thousand plus feet in elevation to get to said tree or cliff.
Although, that is how the hunt may end, it begins by covering miles of road or trails checking for tracks or hoping a dog smells something in the wind that starts the day with the bawl of hounds striking off towards their quarry and that does happen quite often on some hunts, sometimes not on others. Mountain lion movement, like all wild animals is hard to predict, but our seasoned staff of trained hounds men will do their very best to strike that fresh track and with complete enthusiasm, when that scent or track is struck, the dogs will pick up from there and take over the hunt hopefully to culminate at the bottom of a tall tree with a large Tomcat mountain lion bayed up in it.
If you’ve ever had the desire to chase mountain lions in big country, contact us about your Idaho backcountry lion hunting adventure.
While on this Idaho backcountry adventure, you may encounter other predators that are completely legal to hunt (depending on the dates of your hunt) including wolves, bobcats and coyotes. All of which, when in the proper season, we encourage you to take as part of your adventure as every removed predator breathes a sigh of relief to its prey base of elk and deer. Something we all love to pursue in fall.
Our winter mountain lion hunts take place out of our backcountry wall tent camp where even though it may be -20 outside, your woodburning camp stove should keep you warm enough for sleeping and comfort inside. Outside, it is up to you to dress accordingly.
